An Event that Became a Tradition

The idea to organize an important fishing tournament came from Mr. Richard Laplante. In 1999, this businessman from Chapais legally constituted the non-profit organization and received support from many partners to organize the first edition of the Festival du doré Baie-James.

Over the years, the event has continued to grow and, over time, has become the largest walleye fishing tournament in Quebec. Since then, the FDDBJ has generated significant economic benefits for Chapais and shines on the city and the region thanks to this renowned festival. Today, the Festival welcomes around 800 persons daily, including nearly 1,000 fishermen throughout the tournament.
